The Summer School will take place from the 3rd to 15th September 2007 at Hof Trade Fair Centre, Germany; it will be integrated into the three-days Trade Fair Geofora  with the Science Symposium on Well Drilling, Well Development and Geothermal Energy Resources. The topic of the Summer School is Brunnenbau und Ländliche Wasserversorgung.

Groundwater management as part of general water resources management is of great importance for a sustainable utilisation of the precious resource groundwater. Concepts of drilling projects should not only focus on tapping sufficient resources for drinking water provision, but also on managing the resource itself in an environmental sound and sustainable manner.

Moreover, social and economic conditions of resource utilisation must be considered and they should aim at developing independent decision-making by participants through integrated learning processes. The gender equality is an important aspect in projects as well; women are especially affected by poor water supplies and can benefit directly from any improvement.

The Summer School aims at offering technical and ecological understanding of topics related to drinking water supply by wells; the hygienic aspects of provision and storage are considered as well. The Summer School program is designed for presenting some topics at the trade fair and to exchange experiences with the participants of the same. In addition the co-operation between the Alumni/Alumnae, partner countries and industry will be encouraged, thereby promoting the development of planning and management concepts for supply of clean drinking water. The newly established German Alumni Water network (GAWN) will be presented.

The following are the main topics of the Summer School:

       1.   Planning Concepts – Integrated Watershed Management

       2.   Groundwater Well Drilling

       3.   Well Design

       4.   Water Distribution and

       5.   Legal, economic aspects and safety of supply

A workshop is offered to prepare the participants for their contributions to the trade fair with an opportunity for exchanging technical knowledge, experiences and drafting the main topics for presentation.

The Summer School participants will have the opportunity to listen to the scientific presentations, to visit the fair as well as to establish contact with companies and other  professionals.
