DAAD-Alumni Expert Seminar “Climate Change and Food
Security: Integrated Watershed Management as
adaptive Planning Tool”
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides
financial means for conducting an International
Alumni Expert Seminar at Kabale (Western Uganda)
through the Centre of Capacity Development (CICD) at
Universität Siegen in co-operation with Makerere
University Institute of Environment and Natural
Resources (MUIENR), Uganda, and the German Alumni
Water Network (GAWN). The Expert Seminar “Climate
Change and Food Security: Integrated Watershed
Management as adaptive Planning Tool” is scheduled
from 27th June to 08th July, 2011 ( 27th June day of
arrival, 08th July day of departure). The seminar is
the second one in a row of two on the same topic.
Objective of the Seminar
The Expert Seminar aims at enhancing human capacity
for food production in the Lake Kivu region through
already known watershed management measures.
Researchers from Makerere University, experts from
regional and from user associations offices will set
up a monitoring and evaluation plan for two
catchment areas, Bufundi and Chahhi, based on the
situation analysis and management plan established
during the first workshop in 2010.
In the first workshop, the local situation as been
analysed, and most feasible management options for
sustainable and secure food production have been
formulated in a participatory way. Lessons learned
from previous Summer Schools in Kenya on Integrated
Watershed Management (IWM) were integrated in the
participatory watershed management plan.

In the seminar 2011, management plans will be
monitored, and a participatory tool for M&E will be
developped together with the responsible user
association. Probable impact of climate change shall
be discussed with special focus on local induced
fostering of regional climate change. The existing
management plan will be adjusted and improved. All
activities shall take place in close co-operation
with relevant regulatory institutions, the Forum for
Agriculture Research in Africa, and the local
population.

Participants:
29 participants are expected to take part in the
DAAD Alumni Expert Seminar 2011 in Kabale / Uganda.
15 DAAD Alumni are representing the member
universities of the regional network on Integrated
Watershed Management (IWMNet) Eastern Africa as well
as institutions in the region related to economics
or water affairs. They function as resource persons
and facilitators for their respec-tive institutions
and disciplines. The regional oriented seminar
focuses on participants from following countries:
Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Ruanda.
10 experts from the concerned local Water
Associations in the catchment will take part, as
well as the regional water authorities in Uganda to
ensure integration of concepts developed for the
sustainable watershed management into the existing
institutional and legal framework and
im-plementation of the planned activities.
4 lecturers of Makerere University and Siegen
University are participating as organisers.
