“Sustainable Management of Water and Land Resources II, Case Study Central Kalimantan”

Topics and Goals:

Regional knowledge together with international experience were integrated to find solutions for pressing problems in Indonesia, namely on the Island of Kalimantan.
The management of water and land resources has to be part of a more holistic concept, a master plan, which integrates spatial planning, nature protection and the application of appropriate practices and policies. Central Kalimantan is endangered through legal and illegal logging, mining activities, wrong agricultural policies etc. The SURED/GAWN Seminar& Workshop brought these and associated problems at a common platform.
This Seminar was the second of a row of three seminars, performed directly in the Project area, in Central Kalimantan.
The goal of the first Seminar 2008 dealt with the realities of Central Kalimatan, including its grave problems.
The second one now discussed possible solutions taking the case study Central Kalimantan.
The third one shall arrive at conclusions, shall formulate final recommendations and develop a Master Plan.

Themes of the second seminar & workshop:


* Case studies of river basins representing various social, economic and environmental settings
* Participatory approaches, indigenous local knowledge etc,
* Use of advanced techniques for assessment of water and land resources for better planning
* Water transportation through canals and interlinking of rivers
* Settlement and Housing of river basins and their problem in drainage and sewerage systems
* Micro Hydropower plant and Solar energy for isolated areas
* Coastal fresh water resources management and development
* Computational methods and mathematical models to simulate sustainable natural resources development
* Ground water mining and recharge in wetlands
* Integrating wetlands into watershed/river basin management
* Spatial Plan and Master Plan for Wetland areas
