The German Academic Exchange
Service (DAAD) provided financial means to the German Alumni Water
Network (GAWN) for organizing an Alumni Expert Seminar to be held in
Accra, Ghana.
The Expert Seminar took place from Sun, Feb 28, 2009 until Fri, Mar 05,
2009. It was organized by the Master Study Program “Resources
Engineering” at the Department of Civil Engineering, Geo- &
Environmental Sciences, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT),
Karlsruhe, Germany in cooperation with the Department of Agricultural
Engineering, University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana.
The key question of the seminar was “How can the increasing
demand for water in coastal (mega-)cities be satisfied without
jeopardizing coastal areas?”.
This question was approached from the perspectives of natural, engineering and socio-economic sciences.
Four sessions for presentations and discussions to following themes were held:
- “Dynamics in Coastal Areas”
- “Technical Management”
- “Socio-Economic and Administrative Management”
- “Integrated Management”
Aside from the above listed sessions, featuring presentations and
discussions, the program offered presentations by keynote speakers, an
excursion, a closing plenary discussion including a summary of the main
outcomes, and an open house at the University of Ghana. Participants
actively contributed to sessions by
presenting reports on their projects in consultancy, administration or academe,
chairing a session, and
attending session discussions and the closing plenary discussion.
